Classic Cruiser Fire Engine
At last, a fire engine toy with no working siren! This classic zoomer is made of steel with rubber tires and has little wooden ladders on the back. It’s for kids age one to three, and they’ll tear across the patio like nobody’s business. Just keep them away from garden hose and the BBQ grill. Dimensions: 28 inches long, 10 inches wide, 14 inches tall.

Love You Forever
This is the book I always give new parents. Robert Munsch wrote many of my favorite kids’ books, but this one makes my breath catch. It’s a hilarious, poignant story about a mother who sings to her baby boy every night: “I’ll love you forever / I’ll like you for always / As long as I’m living / My baby you’ll be.” It’s also available in Spanish and French, which is sweet if you know parents who plan to raise bilingual children. Please go read it, you will like it.

Vintage Suitcase Gift Set
This adorable suitcase comes stocked with handmade merino wool booties, a hoodie cardigan, and a stuffed lamb. Close the suitcase, tie a bow on the handle and voila! It’s pricey, but it would make a great group gift, and I know a lot of you are crafty sorts who appreciate a cute idea.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! The “blood” comes packaged in a faux I.V. bag for your little vampires. It’s actually slime, dyed red for Halloween, which really ups the yuck-quotient. For ages 3 and up.

Hand-Made Maracas
Cha cha cha! Just what every parent dreams of–a large, loud maraca in the house. But this isn’t noise, people, this is music. (Music that can, perhaps, be limited to a fifteen-minute music portion of the afternoon and then stowed on a high shelf.) They’d also make great additions to the centerpiece for your next fiesta. There’s a whole cast of papier-mache maraca characters to help you and your little ones get the conga line started. You can rattle a monkey, a cat, a bunny, a crow, a heart, a skull, or a devil. They’re 12 inches long with large 4-inch heads, and are handmade and painted… in China. Ay! Ay! Ay!

Billy-Bob Pacifier Teeth
I know it’s juvenile, but I find this buck-teeth pacifier hilarious. Slip this into your baby’s mouth while she’s preoccupied figuring out whether her feet are attached to her legs. What’s a teeny-weeny bit of shame compared to the amazing photos you’ll get?

New President T-Shirt
The shirts say, respectively, “Mommy wants a new president.” and “I wouldn’t vote for Bush if I were you.” They ship next day, you can still get a one in time for the big vote. Order a shirt for your favorite little American, especially if you’re planning a trip abroad.

Bed Bed Bed
Bed Bed Bed is a genius children’s book that comes with a CD by They Might Be Giants. You can play the CD and sing along to the quirky lyrics written in the book. My favorite song is about a kitten who wants to make Valentines for the whole world. He sings, “I’m sittin’ in my window, with my kitten arms akimbo. My paws are tired from this Valentine’s work.” Kids love the darn thing. Fortunately, unlike many things kids love, it doesn’t make you want to bang your head against something solid. When you finish, and your little buddy whispers, “Again!” you’ll want to oblige.

Monkey Shoes
Before I get into the details of these great monkey booties, I thought I’d share the site description: “Your little monkey will go bananas over these monkeys on a vibrant red background. They will a-peel to all ages.” My goodness. Pained groans aside, these are baby shoes with monkeys on them! They slip on with no ties and are washable. Also, they have monkeys on them.

Roller Skates
ON SALE
Oh! Remember real roller skates? You can almost hear the pock-pock-pock of the wheels, and feel the drag of the rubber stop. These throwback skates are more fun, and far more stylish, than roller blades. The pair pictured here are for girls, but you can buy them in boy’s, women’s, or men’s sizes. Lace them up, pull on a pair of headphones and tight jeans, and roll around the block.$30 at Amazon
